Biography
Greg Scates is an adjunct professor in the Accounting Area of the Costello College of Business. Greg recently retired from the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) as Director of the Office of Outreach. In this role, he oversaw the educational forums provided to accounting firms as well as the PCAOB Scholarship Program, and other functions. Prior to assuming this role, Greg oversaw inspections assessing accounting firms’ compliance with professional standards and applicable laws and rules. While serving as Deputy Chief Auditor, he provided technical direction in the development of the PCAOB’s auditing and other professional standards.
Greg also investigated allegations of financial fraud and violations of federal securities laws while employed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), including such issues as merger/restructuring charges, acquisition reserves, segment reporting, and independence of auditors. Prior to joining the SEC, Greg spent much of his career with national accounting firms, auditing both private and public companies, including a two-year rotation program at the national office of one of these firms.
Greg earned a B.S. degree in Accounting from The University of Tennessee at Martin and a M.S. degree in Accounting from George Mason University.
