Biography

James W. Harvey is an associate professor of marketing in the Costello College of Business. He received his PhD in business administration from Penn State University and was the national Beta Gamma Sigma Fellow. He earned an MBA from the University of Miami (Coral Gables) and a BS in marketing from the University of Illinois at Urbana. Harvey is also Faculty Representative to the George Mason University Board of Visitors.

Harvey's professional interests include strategic planning and marketing management both for profit and not-for-profit organizations and the impact of learning nets on distance education effectiveness. He has participated in over two hundred marketing studies, taskforces, consultancies and executive development seminars for managers of for profit and not-for-profit organizations including Booz Allen Hamilton, Department of Health and Human Services, Department of the Interior, Kodak, Fairfax County Park Authority, Federal Trade Commission, Internal Revenue Service, National Glass Institute, National Institutes of Health, United Way of America and the World Bank.

His technology-based teaching initiatives include hybrid distance education, multi-point distance education using electronic whiteboard technology and web-based initiative with the School of Management and the University of Katmandu, Nepal. His efforts have been supported and recognized by Xerox Corporation, SPSS, Inc., and George Mason University.

Harvey has published over thirty works in journals, proceedings of professional associations, and in books of readings, including the Academy of Management Executive, Business and Society, Health Marketing Quarterly, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Economic Psychology, Journal of Professional Services Marketing, Journal of Public Policy & Marketing, and Long Range Planning. He is also occasional reviewer for Health Care Financing Administration, Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly, Journal of Public Policy and Marketing, and Journal of Marketing.

His most recent publications (co-authored) include: "Influence of Awarenewss and Training on Cyber Secuirity", Journal of Internet Commerce (2010) and "The Effects of Peer Collaboration on Student Evaluations of Distance Education in Marketing", Society for Marketing Advances (2012).

  • Published an article titled, “Improving AACSB Assurance of Learning with Importance-Performance and Learning Growth: A Case Study” in Marketing Education Review in 2017 (with colleague Kevin McCrohan).
  • Had the presentation titled “Case Study of Performance Importance Analysis in Assurance of Learning” (with colleague Kevin McCrohan) published in the proceedings from the EDULearn16 in May 2016.
  • Had the presentation titled “Consumer Connectivity: Recommended Curriculum,” published in the proceedings from the 7th International Conference of Education, Research and Innovation in 2014 (with colleague Kevin McCrohan).
  • Had the paper titled “A New Way of Learning: The Impact of Hybrid Distance Education on Student Performance” (with coauthors Kevin McCrohan, Frank Philpot, and Jeffrey Kulick) published in the conference proceedings for the Horizon Report E-Live Webinar New Media Consortium and the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative in 2014.
  • Had the presentation titled “The Effects of Peer Collaboration on Student Evaluations of Distance Education in Marketing” published in the proceedings from the Society for Marketing Advances in 2012 (with coauthors Kevin McCrohan, Jeffrey Kulick, and Frank Philpot). 
  • Awarded the Distance Ed Grant from the Office of Distance Education at George Mason University in 2011 to pilot distance education in MKTG 301.
  • Presented the paper titled “The Impact of Hybrid Distance Learning on Student Performance” at the American Institute of Higher Education 7th International Conference in Williamsburg, VA. The paper was also published in the conference proceedings (with Kevin McCrohan, Frank Philpot, and Jeffrey Kulick).
