Biography
Jon P. Yankee, MBA, CFP®, co-founded FJY Financial in January of 2006 with Marjorie Fox. In addition to his duties as a Partner and Senior Financial Advisor, as Chief Executive Officer Jon leads the strategic direction of the firm, and the development and implementation of its well-known human capital strategy.
For the fifth issue in a row, in 2020, Jon was named for fee-only financial planning in Washingtonian magazine’s list of “Top Financial Advisors”. In three previous issues, he was named the “Top Vote Getter.” In addition, in 2020, for the sixth year, Jon was named by Northern Virginia magazine in its “Top Financial Professionals” edition under the categories of Financial Planning and Investment Management.
In the spring of 2013, the National Capital Area chapter of the Financial Planning Association (FPA) named Jon their “Planner of the Year”. Also, in May of 2013, FJY was named the sixth “Best Place to Work” by Washington Business Journal. He was also named a Finalist for the SmartCEO Washington 2015 Money Manager Awards.
Mr. Yankee has been a speaker at a number of industry events and conferences focusing on internship programs, his firm’s hiring practices and strategies, and developing the next generation of owners. He has also been quoted in publications such as Investment News, Financial Planning, The Journal of Financial Planning, Investment Advisor, CNBC.com, Bloomberg Wealth Manager, Registered Rep., Investor’s Business Daily, Forbes.com, Men’s Health, Financial Week, Bankrate.com, Wall Street Journal Online, and Dow Jones Newswire.
Jon is an adjunct professor at the Edward S. Ageno School of Business at Golden Gate University, teaching a survey course in personal financial planning, and is regularly a “Mentor” at the FPA’s Residency Program for new advisors in the profession. He is also a founding member of the George Mason University’s Financial Planning and Wealth Management Advisory Board.
He is a member of the Investment News Practice Management Advisory Board and was an original member of the CNBC Digital Financial Advisor Council. Jon is also a former member of the Board of Directors of the FPA - National Capital Area chapter, a former member of the Board of Directors of the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic Region of the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA), and is a NAPFA-Registered Financial Advisor.
Jon earned his Master of Business Administration in International Management with a focus on Finance from the Thunderbird School of Global Management, in 1998. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Studies with a concentration in Asian Studies and Japanese from the University of Richmond in 1992. He also completed undergraduate work at Kansai University of Foreign Studies in Osaka, Japan.
Prior to founding FJY, Jon earned his Certified Financial Planner™ certification following coursework at the College for Financial Planning in Denver, CO and after a stint as a Financial Advisor for Merrill Lynch. He also worked five years in Honolulu, HI as a Program Manager for the Pacific Basin Economic Council (PBEC), an organization of chief executives that fosters and promotes the development of trade and trade policy throughout the Asia Pacific region.
